So Let's Think About It.........Yesterday, January 21st was Dr.
Martin Luther King Day and it was obviously overshadowed by the
Presidential Inauguration Celebrations. This is no surprise. For many
years the US has discounted the celebration of the holiday of Martin
Luther King Day. This day has shared holidays such as Civil Rights
Day, Human Rights Day and even shared the birthday of confederate
army generals Jackson and Lee in the past. Legislation for a MLK
holiday was introduced 4 days after his assassination in 1968 however
it took until the year 2000 to actually have all states celebrate
this holiday solely on it's own day and by it's rightful name. Today, being
a federal holiday, the government run offices are closed however many
establishments, businesses and schools do not care enough about the
holiday to close in commemoration.
I suppose by having Martin Luther King Day and the Presidential
Inauguration Celebration on the same day, some must think Dr. King
and President Obama have a lot in common.
